Overview

Johannesburg is a city in South Africa, in Gauteng. About 9.4 million people live in the city proper, making it the 1st largest city of South Africa in our atlas.

It lies at 26.20° S, 28.04° E, about 1,767 m (5,797 ft) above sea level, and keeps time on the Africa/Johannesburg time zone.

Climate

Johannesburg has a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb). The warmest month is usually Jan, with average highs near 28°C (83°F); the coolest nights come in Jul at about 2°C (35°F). Around 642 mm (25 in) of rain and snow falls in a typical year, most of it in Dec.
